Frequently Asked Questions

Below are useful articles written by the Principal of The Bridgewater Clinic about some of the most common conditions patients have been to see us.

One of the questions often put to osteopaths is - why do I have back pain with radiating pain down my legs? Back pain is commonly caused by ligament sprains, disc bulges, muscle strains and joint capsule irritation.

The pains down the back of the leg could be caused by the same reason as the back pain and are known generally as sciatica. It is important to find out what structures are involved in causing the symptoms of back pain and sciatica. Any assessment by an osteopath should also check that there are no serious diseases involved. Once the tissues that are causing the back pain and sciatica have been identified it is important to find out what has predisposed those tissues to be dysfunctional in the first place. Often there are postural reasons such as a longer leg or rotated pelvis and sacrum (the bone at the base of the back).

Osteopathy can help to rebalance the posture in order to reduce the strain on the dysfunctional tissues allowing the body to heal them and reduce the sciatica and back pain. Before you know it you will be up and about and getting on with your life.
